The Path to Water Sustainability

Recharging Our Groundwater

Clayton WD has teamed up with a neighboring water district in our area, in an effort to recharge our upper aquifer.  Together we are applying for an Appropriate Use Permit which allows us to put flood flows from the Eastside Bypass to the most beneficial use possible.    When flood water is flowing,  Clayton WD growers will be diverting this water into recharge ponds and distributing it across our farm ground.  We will be maximizing the use of this water by both irrigating our crops and recharging the the upper aquifer to help achieve water balance.

Water Management

Our growers know the importance of limited resources like groundwater.    Nearly all Clayton WD members have implemented some type of water efficiency tool to help conserve this precious resource.  Some tools in our District include:

  • low flow drip systems for our orchard and row crops,
  • watering on demand by using up to the minute soil moisture sensors and weather based data,
  • state of the art dairy water return systems that recycle the same drop of water multiple times,
  • miles of pipelines to efficiently transport irrigation water from wells to the fields
  • overhead center pivot sprinkler systems
  • meters that allow us to track our water use

Future Projects

Clayton WD has a variety of water projects planned that will allow our growers to import surface water from the various water districts adjacent to us.   These projects will help us diversify the sources of our irrigation water beyond the groundwater, riparian water, and flood waters currently being used within our District bounds.
